PH Cuppers Ready To Play VS Pakistan On Holy Friday

MANILA, Philippines — Officials of the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team are not worried that they will not enjoy their so-called homecourt advantage to the fullest when the Filipino netters battle Pakistan Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie starting on Good Friday.

With the first two singles matches to be played on Friday, team officials expect only few spectators as most fans would be either on a vacation or at home observing the holy day. “We’re already expecting that few people might come to watch the matches, but we’re still optimistic that people will continue to support the team,” said PH Davis Cup administrator Randy Villanueva said.

The crowd has been a big factor in Davis Cup ties, but Villanueva added the team will just continue to play their best and concentrate on winning their matches even with an expected motley crowd.

“They’ll still feel at home, because they will be playing on a familiar court, so there’s nothing to worry about,” Villanueva said.

United States-based Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales arrived in Manila last Sunday, while Francis Casey Alcantara, who’s also based in the US, planed in from California last night to join local netter Johnny Arcilla in training.

The Pakistan team composed of Aisam Qureshi, Aqeel Khan, Yasir Khan, Muhammad Abid and non-playing team captain Mohammed Khalid is set to arrive Wednesday.
