Manila Times – Gonzales, Arcilla plunge into Davis Cup action

Written by Emil C. Noguera

Veteran campaigners Ruben Gonzales and Johnny Arcilla will start the country’s campaign against Thailand in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie beginning today in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu.

Gonzales, 27, takes on the 17-year-old Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul in the opening singles at 3:30 p.m. while Arcilla battles former Asian Games singles gold medalist Danai Udomchoke in the second singles match at 6 p.m.

“I feel really good about the draw. Being more experienced is not really an advantage. It is who executes better will win,” said Gonzales.

Seeing action in the crucial doubles scheduled on Saturday at 6 p.m. are Filipino-American Treat Huey and former Australian Open juniors doubles champion Francis Casey Alcantara opposite junior netters Nuttanon Kadchapanan and Pruchya Isarow.

Playing in the reverse singles on Sunday are Gonzales and Udomchoke at 3:30 p.m., and Arcilla and Wishaya at 6 p.m.

Teams are allowed to change their nominations one hour before the game starts.

The Philippines holds a 3-2 edge over Thailand.

Thailand was victorious in its last two meetings with the Philippines. The Thais defeated the Filipinos, 4-1, in 1999 held in Nonthaburi, Thailand, and in 1998, 4-1, staged in Manila. The Philippines won over Thailand in 1985, 1978 and 1959.

The winner of the Philippines-Thailand match will advance to the finals in September against the winner of the New Zealand-Pakistan game.
