The Philippine team won the first two singles matches of its Davis Cup tie against Syria Friday in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

Johnny Arcilla bucked a second set collapse to defeat Issam Haitham Taweel, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, to open the Asia/Oceania Zone Group 2 series.

Ruben Gonzales, meanwhile, swept Marc Abdelnour in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-2, to make it two straight for the Filipinos.

The home squad has a chance to bag the tie in Saturday’s doubles matchup, with Filipino veterans Treat Huey and Elbert Anesta going up against Abdelnour and Majdi Salim.

The series wraps up Sunday with the reverse singles matchups featuring a crossover of the opening day protagonists.
