ELNERT Anasta took a 2-0 lead over Syrian rival Issam Taweel before their third reverse singles match was suspended due to rain yesterday at the Plantation Bay and Resort Spa in Lapu Lapu City in Cebu.

Despite the suspension of the game, the Philippines is now assured of a place in the second round of the Davis Cup Asia Oceania tie. The Philippines took a tie-clinching 3-0 lead over Syria late Saturday evening after Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales pulled off a 6-0, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over Taweel and Marc Abdelnour.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team got off to a good start last Friday after Johnny Arcilla scored a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Taweel and Gonzales eked out a 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-2 beating of Abdelnour.

Thailand arranged a clash on April 5 to 7 with the Philippines following a 3-1 beating of Kuwait.
