THE Filipino-American pair of Ruben Gonzales and Treat Conrad Huey sealed the Philippines’ spot in the second round of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II as the hosts downed Syria, 3-0, in their first-round tie at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

Gonzales and Huey defeated Marc Abdelnour and Issam Haitham Taweel, 6-0, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, in the doubles on Saturday night, rendering the result of the two reverse singles matches on Sunday insignificant. The tie is best-of-five affair.

Gonzales was pitted against Taweel in the first reverse singles and Johnny Arcilla against Abdelnour in the closing match.

Arcilla kicked off the host’s successful campaign with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win over Taweel. The Filipinos went up 2-0 after Gonzales disposed of Abdelnour also in three sets, 6-4, 7-6(1), 6-2.

The Philippines will face either Thailand and Kuwait in the second round tie. The Thais are ahead, 2-1, over the Kuwaitis at the Kuwait Tennis Federation Center in Meshref.

New Zealand, meanwhile, clinched a spot in the second round after a masterful 5-0 crushing of Lebanon. The Kiwis are now waiting for the winner between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, who are tied at 2-2.

The winner in the second round will be promoted to Group I, which include powerhouse teams Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Uzbekistan.
