PH Cuppers open Davis Cup campaign against Syrians

When the Cebuana Lhuillier Philippine Davis Cup team plays against Syria in today’s opening of the 2013 Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group II tie at the Plantation Bay Spa and Resort in Lapu-Lapu City, team manager Jean Henri Lhuillier has his sights set on an even bigger target.

“For me, the goal is to get back the country into Group 1 again in the Davis Cup and with the present team, I like our chances. The team prepared long and hard for this competition,” said Lhuillier, who is expected to be with the team for the event.

International tennis veterans Treat Conrad Huey and Ruben Gonzales will lead the Philippine team, together with recent Philippine Columbian Association champion Johnny Arcilla, and Elbert Anasta, who won last year’s Olivarez Cup.

The Philippines aims to regain its Group 1 slot after after losing last year to Indonesia.

“We are very excited and honored to host the Davis Cup tie this year and personally, I am motivated when I see players whom I have supported in the past reaching the international level of competition. I love the sport and I will continue supporting tennis, believing the sport can only grow better,” said PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies President and Chief Executive Officer Jean Henri Lhuillier, president and Chief Executive Officer of the PJL Group of companies.

“With Treat Huey playing doubles, Arcilla and Ruben playing great singles, I like our options and chances” added the sportsman-businessman Lhuillier.

Lhuillier is also a supporter of basketball and softball.

Also included in the organizing team are Philta vice president Randy Villanueva, Cebuana Lhuillier regional head Anton Arrieta, former Philta regional chief and Sportswriter Association of Cebu head John Pages, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza, Councilor Harry Radaza and Plantation Bay Spa and Resort general manager Efren Belarmino.
