Manila Bulletin – Arcilla Turns Back Siber, Gains Final

December 7, 2012, 6:53pm

Reigning champion Johnny Arcilla exacted sweet revenge over Fil-German Marc Sieber by scoring a masterful 6-2, 6-4 victory yesterday to book a return trip to the finals in the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open presented by Cebuana Lhuillier in Paco, Manila.

Proving he’s still the master of the PCA shell courts, Arcilla came through with some unbelievable shots to befuddle his 2010 finals tormentor and get the chance to defend his title.

"Wala na akong iniisip before the match. Basta kung manalo, manalo. Kung talo, talo. Kaya siguro gumanda yung laro ko dahil relaxed ako. Walang pressure," said Arcilla, who is gunning for his seventh title.

Patience was clearly showed in his game as he stuck to his game plan, mixing his shots well from baseline that oftentimes produces winners.

"Lahat ng tira ko na forehand, maganda. Saka hinabaan ko talaga yung mga tira ko. Sabi ko, kapag maiksi ang bola ko sa kanya, medyo delikado ako," Arcilla said.

Arcilla cruised smoothly in the opening set and was leading 5-2 in the second frame when Sieber staged a fightback.

He broke Arcilla’s serve in the eight game then held his own in the succeeding game to make the match livelier.

But Arcilla held serve on the next game to seal the deal.

"He played good. He changed the height on his ball and I had a lot of errors. I got into the rhythm in the second set, but it was too late," said Sieber, a regular campaigner in Futures tournaments in Europe.

Arcilla will face Davis Cupper Ruben Gonzales in the finals after the latter outlasted Elbert Anasta, 6-4, 7-6 (6)..

Meanwhile, women's semifinal action resumes today with Fil-German top pick Katharina Lehnert going up against Rachelle De Guzman while second seed Clarice Patrimonio taking on defending champion Marian Capadocia.
