DEFENDING champion Johnny Arcilla topped the Cebuana Lhuillier men’s open after second seed Vicente Alberto Anasta was forced to retire in the third set due to cramps, 6-4, 4-6, 4-3.
Anasta was ahead in the third set, 3-2, when cramps hit him.

“I requested for a medical time-out but they only grant that for injuries, not cramps,” Anasta said. “So I forced myself to play the rest of the set but bumigay talaga ang katawan ko. Kaya pa nang isipan ko but di na kaya ng katawan ko, di na nga ako makatayo,” Anasta, who is also a private first class in the Philippine Army, said.
It was the first time Anasta made the finals after four straight quarterfinal appearances in the men’s tour.
For finishing second, Anasta earned P20,000, while Arcilla, who won his fourth straight crown, got P40,000.
Sun.Star columnist and former age grouper John Pages, who was watching the finals, said that cramps should not be taken for granted.
“It is important to have proper conditioning. I believe Anasta was already stressed out with his game because prior to this match, he had a tough match against Patrick John Tierro in the semifinals yesterday then he played in the doubles,” Pages said.
Anasta beat Tierro in a grueling semifinal, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (9), and paired with Ronard Joven to make the doubles finals.
However, because of the injury, Arcilla and Tierro easily got the doubles title as Anasta opted to forfeit the doubles finals too. ISL
