Arcilla stays alive

Only defending double-champion Johnny Arcialla remains standing among the local bets in the 5th Cebuana Lhuillier Men’s Open Tennis after a straight sets victory over Leander Lazaro, 6-3, 6-1 at the Baseline Sports and Recreation Center yesterday.

Arcilla did not waste time due to the scourging heat and finished the game fast.

Arcilla will be facing the young Jurence Mendoza in the quarterfinal round this 3 p.m.

Mendoza moved up to the next round at the expense of Tony Sagansay, 6-1, 6-2.

The other quarterfinalists are one-time Cebuana Lhuillier men’s open champion PJ Tierro, Rolando Ruel, Alex Lazaro, Kim Ivor Saraza, Ronard Joven and Onyok Anasta.

The second round matches of the quarterfinalists saw Saraza kicking out Cebuano Israel “RJ” Abarquez with a 6-3, 7-6 win while Tierro posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Roel Capangpangan.

Anasta dismissed Mark Alcoseba, 6-1, 6-4 as Ruel grabbed a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Kenneth Salvo while Lazaro retired the first player to get into the second round, Juvan Divinagracia.

Joven got the last quarterfinal seat after pulling past Arcie Mano, 6-4, 7-6.

Joven will face Tierro next while the other quarterfinal matches will have Saraza versus Anasta and Ruel opposite Lazaro.

There were nine Cebuanos, who got into the main draw, but all of them lost in the first round except for Abarquez who reached the second round.

Jacob Lagman lost to Alex Lazaro 6-1, 3-6, 4-6; Frankin Encarnacion bowed to Tony Sagansay, 6-1, 0-6, 2-6; Roy Tabotabo succumbed to Mendoza, 0-6,1-6; Shanur Khandaker lost to Ronard Joven, 4-6, 2-6; Yoyoy Villa lost to Arcie Mano, 7-6, 6-7, 3-6.

Aside from the singles, the event also features the doubles and pro-am events.
