ERASE Xfoliant Plantcenta made it two in a row by beating AMA Computer University, 88-68, even as MOB Packers outplayed Philippine Coast Guard, 101-80, in the 2012 MBL Open basketball championship at the J. Nakpil Sports Complex in Malate, Manila.
JV Fererria scored 17 points, including four three-point shots, and the Quezon City-based Erasers of coach Yonn Garcia capitalized on their vast experience to overwhelm the younger and smaller Titans en route to their second straight win in this prestigious, two-and-a-half month long tournament supported by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Cebuana Lhuillier, Dickies Underwear and PRC Couriers.
Alwyn Manalang, Macky Acosta, Marlon Gomez, Rico Rivera and Mark Sarangay scored eight points or more for Erase Plantcenta, which debuted w ith a smashing 84-66 win over Coast Guard last July 5.
Archie Bansil and Von Gile finished with 10 points apiece for the Mark Herrera-mentored Titans, who are using the tournament as part of their buildup for the coming 2012 NAASCU season.
Equally impressive was MOB, which drew double-digit scores from forme r Talk N Text standout Orly Daroya and three other players to subdue Coast Guard.
Daroya scattered a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the third quarter alone when MOB pulled away for good.
Mike Ong added 17 points, ex-pro Boyet Bautsita and Mac Montilla contributed 11 points apiece, JV Orera had 10 and playing coach Richie Melencio had seven for MOB.
Christopher Gargar led Coast Guard with 15 points, followed by Elvin Torres with 15 and Mark Acolicol with 14.
It was the second straight setback for Coast Guard, which is being managed by VADM Edmund C. Tan and coach Cdr. Edgar Ybanez.
Multi-titled coach Loreto “Ato” Tolentino is the commissioner, while Albert Andaya is the tournament director.
